Beginning in 1913, The Canadian Arctic Expedition set out on a journey aboard the HMCS Karluk. Organized by a renowned anthropologist Vilhjalmur Stefansson, this exploration team began studying and exploring in the Arctic. When the Karluk eventually became stuck in the ice, the members of the crew ventured out to hunt caribou with Captain Bob Bartlett. Ultimately, the ship sank and the crew was stranded, but Bartlett organized a march across the ice which ended in the loss of many of the members.

The details of this voyage were composed by Bartlett in ‘The Last Voyage of the Karluk’, a book that describes the journey, the encounters with Inuk Eskimo people, Alaskan geography and topography, treacherous weather, and tales of the shipwreck.
