“I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I’ll go to it laughing.”

― Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

A fine printing of Herman Melville’s two most popular works – ‘Moby Dick’ and ‘Typee’.

‘Moby Dick’ is perhaps the most famous sea adventure novel of the 19th-century. First appearing in periodicals, Herman Melville’s most famous work saw an initial mix of responses on its way to becoming a ‘Great American Novel’, even causing authors like William Faulkner to wish they had written the book themselves. While the work itself is a story of hunting the great whale Moby Dick, it is written with themes social class, good and evil, and even the existence of God.

‘Typee’ (1846) is classic travel literature and is based on Melville’s own experiences on the island of Nuku Hiva, Polynesia. It was because of ‘Typee’ that Melville was coined ‘the man who lived among cannibals.’ According to Howard, Melville

“drew his material from his experiences, from his imagination, and from a variety of travel books when the memory of his experiences were inadequate”

These 1923 illustrated editions feature fine, full-page color engravings by Mead Schaeffer
