“What on earth would a man do with himself, if something did not stand in his way?”

– H.G. Wells

Herbert George Wells was an English writer. He was prolific in many genres, writing dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, satire, biography, and autobiography, including even a book on war games. He is best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called a “father of science fiction”, along with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback.

This masterpiece of science fiction is the fascinating story of Griffin, a scientist who creates a serum to render himself invisible, and his descent into madness that follows.

First photoplay editions are considered quite rare and valuable. While the copyright page states 1897, the photographs of actors include Gloria Stuart, who wasn’t born until 1910. The title itself is different from the original as publishers Grosset and Dunlap added ‘A Fantastic Sensation’ that was not in the original. Nevertheless, this is a fine, first edition printing of one of the most famous works of American horror literature!
